HOW do you choose a photographer?
So, you're wondering how to pick a photographer. What do they even do? Why do I need one, I have a tripod should I just use it? Of course, my answer is going to be hire the photographer. Not because I am one but because I have been in your shoes. I have been the single mom that couldn't afford a photoshoot and wasn't really aware that people did photography as a business. Professional photography to me was just look and smile with your family in Walmart. My friend at the time was getting into photography so she took some pictures for me. We would always trade sessions not really realizing that's what it was. Those photos mean more to me than I can even explain.

Determine your needs:
You should determine type of session you want. Maternity, Family, maybe just a couple session, you need someone that can give you a quality photoshoot experience an images. That will depend on skill level and overall professionalism of the photographer. Your budget will also influence the choice you make. Now never will I ever bash someone just starting out because I have been that photographer. All I am saying is don't go with the cheapest option expecting the most expensive work. For one it isn't fair to the photographer. Two no one is going to be happy at the end of the day. Next, you have to determine your requirements, what do you require to be a satisfied customer? Is there a shot you just have to have? Is there a specific location you would like? This is all important to the experience and the photographer. If the Photographer knows your vision, they can advise you on how to make that a reality and the best location, clothing options, etc.
Budget
When determining a budget for photography, it's important to understand that photographers charge not just for their time but for their expertise and creative vision. Their rates reflect years of training, experience, and the quality of work they provide. If you don't have $75 to $100 set aside for a retainer, it's best to reconsider moving forward to avoid raising expectations without the necessary financial commitment. How much are you willing to invest? What does this session mean to you?
Research and Gather info.
It's important to look into your photographer, now I don't mean go on Facebook and creep on them and their entire family. I just mean to look at their websites, and other social media. This is important, it will help you determine if this photographer is a right fit for you. How do they do consultations? Do they even do consultations? You want to figure out how they relate to you and if they fit your styles and preferences. If they don't this could result in you being unhappy. For example, if you like a Light an Airy edit but book with a Dark and Moody photographer that photographer isn't going to deliver images you like.
Review Portfolios
Look at the consistency and creativity in their portfolio. If they are just now building a portfolio you might not be able to tell so communication will be your most important tool. Determine if their composition and lighting match your style and what you're trying to get from the session. Pay attention to the mood their photos set and how they make you feel, if they make you feel at all.
Read Reviews and Testimonials
Always make sure to check their reviews and look at their testimonials. What do people say about them? Are they reliable? What is the overall opinion that people have about this photographer? These are all things you want to know. Before I was educated in photography, I chose photographers without knowing what to look for and I ended up disappointed more than not.
Consider their professionalism!
Does this photographer pay attention to detail? Do they highlight special moments, do they express things in a unique way? Think about this while trying to book, did they respond to your inquiry in a timely manner? One thing they should always have are contracts and policies that protect you as the client and them as the photographer. They should make things clear to you like location and what you should expect to get from them.
In conclusion
I am just speaking from my own experience and what I have researched and learned about photography, there really is no right answer to everything so make sure you follow your instincts and gut feelings to make your photo session is an experience you cherish forever.
